Home Staging, the Feng Shui Way

4 September 2011

You’ve probably heard of home staging, the process of making your home picture-perfect before you show it to potential home buyers. And you’ve probably heard of Feng Shui, a concept that originated in China of decorating your home in a specific way and placing furniture in specific places, in order to enhance the harmony in your home. Put the two ideas together and you’ll soon be moving out of that home you’ve been trying to sell, and getting into that one that you’ve had your eye on.
Using the ideas of Feng Shui to stage your home can be beneficial for many reasons. The first of course, is that your home may actually feel more peaceful and relaxing. Many experts believe strongly in the principles of Feng Shui, and they should never be taken as simply folklore or myth. The other advantage to staging your home according to Feng Shui principles is that it can help bring positive energy in and keep negative energy out – two things you definitely want when trying to sell your home, and two of the founding principles of Feng Shui.
Energy, or rather the flow of it, is the central idea behind Feng Shui. Feng Shui states that energy should be allowed to flow freely, although it should not be allowed to move too quickly or too slowly. For instance, corners are thought to be too harsh for Feng Shui and extremely disruptive to the flow of energy. Placing a plant at corner angles can soften them, and allow for energy to flow smoothly and freely again. Corridors that are very long can also be too long for Feng Shui. Even though energy won’t be stopped or slowed down, it can also move too quickly. Because of this benches, chairs, or even just a large bouquet of flowers can be enough to slow down the energy, and restore balance to the home.
We couldn’t possibly cover the many, many elements of Feng Shui in this one little blog post. But, when you’re trying to unload your current mortgage on someone else (possibly so that you can take on an even bigger one,) using Feng Shui can help you do it! And mention it to potential home buyers and they might be especially impressed as you walk them through your home pointing out the different elements you used. If nothing else, it will make your home more interesting than the other four they’ve looked at that day, and it will make it stand out among the rest.
