How to Save Money when Celebrating New Year’s Eve Out

29 December 2013

New Year’s Eve is just days away and lots of us are getting ready to go out and celebrate! (Even if we don’t know where we’re going to do it!) But if you do at least know that you’re going to be leaving the house to ring in the New Year, we’ve collected some tips on how you can do it. And for cheap (or at least, cheaper.)

Get your outfit at a thrift store
You’re looking for a brand new outfit that no one’s ever seen for your New Year’s bash – and retailers know it! The Christmas cheer is gone, the Boxing Day sales are over, and prices have gone up. But you don’t have to go into debt if you know where to shop. Go to thrift store such as ValuMart or Goodwill. It may not scream “fancy” to you, but you’ll be surprised at what you find there! And costume jewelry? Forget about it, this is your one-stop shop!

Don’t go to the bar
Bars are one of the most popular stops for people when they’re looking to celebrate New Year’s Eve, and they’re also some of the most expensive. Lots of towns and cities offer free fireworks and free (or cheap) activities for people of all ages. Check these out so you don’t empty your wallet for the bartender.

Know where to go
Many, many restaurants, hotels, and yes, even bars, offer package deals. You pay one flat fee and in exchange you’ll get your drinks and usually, a pretty fabulous meal. This isn’t a gimmick, it actually is cheaper, so go for it!

Stay local
Getting a hotel room for the night can be a good idea, especially if you’re going to be enjoying a few cocktails throughout the evening. But do yourself a favour and at least stay in town. You’ll save money on traveling and gas expenses, and you won’t have a long haul the next morning.

Create a budget
We know, it’s no fun to worry about a budget at such a festive time; but you must. Set a budget that includes everything from your outfit to your drinks to gas money. Of course, in order to make this tip worthwhile, you must stick to it.

Going out on New Year’s can be a really fun way to celebrate on this time of year. But know how to do it right, so that not only can you ring the New Year’s in in style, but also with still a few bucks in your pocket, too!
