Fees that You Should Avoid Paying

15 November 2010

A Moneyville
report
has listed some important areas where you can save money with some
smart thinking. Here are some of them:

  • Gold and platinum reward cards
charge yearly fees to the tune of $120. If you are not a business user, you
will never get the opportunity to use some of the features on these reward
cards. Opt, instead, for no-fee cards such as the President’s Choice Financial
    MasterCard that offer attractive
  • While Google’stoll-free directory
assistance service is no longer available, you can get free listings by texting
“Google” to 466453 along with the name of the business and city from
your mobile phone. You will have to spend 15 cents for the text as opposed to
75 cents for a directory help call. Canada411.ca is a free online directory
that you can use to get business and home numbers.
  • You can try to avoid banking fees
by looking at bank and credit union accounts that offer a waiver on monthly
fees, provided a minimum balance (monthly) is maintained.
  • Saving on mobile phone roaming
fees is also possible if you sign up for a pre-paid roaming package in advance.
The upfront cost of a long-distance cell phone plan is lesser and lasts for
thirty days. If your first trip doesn’t use up all calls, you can use the
credit later. But make sure that text roaming and data are also covered in the
    plan.
  • Ontario law directs that a person
has the right to get a free credit report once every year. Make sure the credit
reporting agency does not charge you any fee for your credit report when you
need it for a mortgage or a home equity loan
