3 Home Renos to do in the Summer

8 August 2011

If you’ve taken out a home equity loan to make renovations on your home, or are thinking about doing so, then you need to get started right away on making those renovations. Summer is the best time to do any home renos, with longer days providing for easier work and nicer temperatures meaning that more can be done – inside and outside the home. But this summer is quickly drawing to a close so if you’re still only considering taking out a home equity loan to make those renovations, it’s time to make a decision. And if your home equity loan is already in place and you’re all set, now is the time to pick up a hammer – or at least call a contractor to do it. But where do you begin? Even if you have a long laundry list of renos that need to be done, here are the three that you should start with before frost sets in and snow begins to fall.
Landscaping//Decks/Pools/Driveways
Of course, any outdoor work that needs to be done should be done in the summer months. Colder climates mean that pools can’t be installed properly and that ground can’t be dug for gardens, lawns, or driveways; working outside during the winter months just isn’t possible much of the time. For that reason, create an extensive list of all the jobs that you need done outside and try to get those done first. If you also have a long list of renos that you want done inside your home, focus on the biggest or most important outdoor jobs first, before moving inside.
Kitchen Renovations
While contractors can certainly work comfortably in your home while tearing out cabinets and putting down ceramic tile, your kitchen still won’t be functional or available for use while renos are being done on it. This will mean ordering in a lot of takeout, or going out to restaurants; not really things that you want to be using your home equity loan for. Instead, have all your kitchen renos done now, while you can still fire up the barbecue outside. And if your kitchen renos also include things like tearing down exterior walls, or installing patio doors, you may also have to open up your kitchen and your home to the outdoor elements; something that is also much more pleasant to do during the summer.
Additions
Not only might an extra room mean that ground needs to be dug for a foundation, this is also a scenario when you will most likely have to knock down walls and use large plastic tarps in place of actual walls for a week or two, if not more. Construction crews can also show up much earlier and work much later during the summer, getting the work done much quicker.
If you’re thinking about making home renos and are going to use a home equity loan to do so, you need to prioritize your list to make the most of that loan. These three home reno projects aren’t just the most convenient to do in the summer, they are also the cheapest. Working in the winter months often means bringing in additional equipment, which costs money; and longer projects, which translates into more expensive projects. Make the most of the summer by getting these renos done now, and you’ll spread every penny of your home equity loan as far as they can go.
